Hymn to Her
Hymn to Her is an ongoing series of watercolours exploring female figures from Western folklore and mythology.
In midlife, I find myself more curious than ever about the female experience, including the stories we tell ourselves and the myths we have inherited. Folklore and mythology speak to the human condition in imaginative, visceral, and often ruthless ways. Filled with unrestrained emotion, volatile gods, and tragedies of unimaginable depth, these stories expose our fears, desires, impulses, and shadows with remarkable honesty.
Created within patriarchal societies, these myths have often been used to define, constrain, or caution women. Yet I am equally drawn to the moments where their female protagonists embody resilience, power, transformation, and defiance. Through revisiting and reimagining these figures, I explore the possibility of alternative narratives, ones that offer space for complexity, agency, and hope.
This series remains open-ended and continues to evolve.
